Tribute to Gerry Morley

Clay Cross Parish Council are saddened to announce the passing of our Chair and longstanding Parish Councillor Gerry Morley, aged 77.

Born in Holmewood and a lifelong local resident, Gerry was a miner and 'overman deputy' from leaving school until 1992, moving onto running Clay Cross & Danesmoor Miners Welfare. He also ran his own successful local business for a number of years.

Gerry attended his first Parish Council meeting on 7th May 1991 and was part of Clay Cross Parish Council for over 33 years!
He represented Clay Cross North Ward on the District Council and was only recently elected as Chair of North East Derbyshire District Council. Gerry planned to use his opportunity as District Council Chair to help local community groups, particularly those for people who are vulnerable, isolated and in need across the District; he had already donated the special responsibility allowance that he would receive as Chair in order to help these groups.

Gerry truly loved the Clay Cross area and cared deeply for the local community. He was passionate in his work for the Parish Council and spent many happy hours here in the Social Centre, including Wednesday Bingo and the social events he was instrumental in organising, which he enjoyed so much.

The funeral service is due to take place on Friday 9th August at St Bartholomew's Church at 11AM followed by burial in Danesmoor Cemetery.

A funeral wake will be held afterwards at Clay Cross Social Centre.
